What is the best way to lay vinyl over old hardwood floor covered in flooring adhesive?

I ripped up the vinyl floor in my bathroom because when whoever laid the floor last did it, they didn't bother to secure the floor beneath it. It appears that several floorboards are cut off before the joist so they bob a little. My question is, after I secure these, what is the best way to lay new floor? My dad said I should just lay quarter inch plywood on top of the adhesive left over from the last floor and just screw it down then lay my new vinyl over that. But with that I worry about pockets that could crack in the future. My father in law said I should spread floor leveler or get adhesive remover but with both of those I'm a little worried it would seep through since I don't think the hardwood floor is sealed very well if at all. Any suggestions on the best method for this situation? What is the best way to lay vinyl over old hardwood floor covered in flooring adhesive?
Secure your 1/4'; luan over the sub flooring. Then if you want to deal w/ the slope in the floor , then use a special primer and a self leveling compound to make the floor flat. These compounds can go to 1';deep( or deeper in 2 pours) to a feather finish. Then put your vinyl down a top this. If you do the pore 1 st , you ll have a heck of a time nailing the new 1/4'; luan down..This all done after its determined the floor (high spot) is structurally sound... 1/4'; plywood with screws ( exterior drywall screws 1 5/8 '; ) every 6'; .

Then cover all the screws with a patch because the screws will make little dimples in the plywood and if you don't patch it will show in the new vinyl floor.
1/4 inch plywood with nails every 4 to 6 inches over the whole floor..
you use 1/4 ply. But you must buy the grade that has no voids in the internal plys. they fill the voids when making the plywood If not a ladies high heel shoe, etc can punture it..use screws so they wont work loose as the old flexs.

EDIT;;;; why not just level out the house some, its really not that hard to do. google ';how to level a pier and beam foundation'; A little $30 hydraulic jack,,A little shim here a little shim there. and while your under there , you can see if it just settled or if termites are eating the wood . Or you can just level the part under the bath floor. as for the bumpy adhesive, just use a hammer to smash the the high points down. If there are really deep pockets you could just skim over them with anykind of filler.
