Does anyone know how to get dried tile adhesive and grout off a slate floor?

The floor has quite a lot of the adhesive all over it, and when we grouted the grout did not wash off very well, it just seemed to soak into the tiles too.

As it is a slate floor I was looking for something that will not damage the tiles. Does anyone know of any kind of chemical that we can put on it to lift off the stuff?

-First experiences of DIY not going down too well so far! The tiles are beautifully straight, but not looking great on top :(

Any one got any ideas?Does anyone know how to get dried tile adhesive and grout off a slate floor?
Hi Holly I have slate beside the oven and my wife treats it with ';Slate Dressing';, it seems to be like thin oil which brings out the lustre of the stone. I was thinking it would be worth trying this it might not take the grout off but if you leave it on overnight it might soften it enough to be gently scraped off using one of those scrapers with the changeable blades, good luck.Does anyone know how to get dried tile adhesive and grout off a slate floor?
Iv'e mostly worked with mortor tile work and with that the best way is to either use a putty knife or scraper. As for the glue there is a product on the market to remove it but you will want to make sure you find one that won't damage the wood flooring. Good luck.
if you're tiles are really nice and you bought them from a dedicated tile shop then ask the staff there. If you bought them from a DIY shop then take a left over tile sample to a tile warehouse and ask them nicely for some advice.

They might even recommend that you put protective coating on your tiles to stop dirt and stains from setting in in the future..

careful what kind of non-professional advice you might get from this site (including mine!)

i found white spirit worked really well when i was taking wall tile grout of my ceramic wall tiles but then they are ceramic tiles and not slate.

On the floor i softened up the grout with soapy water, wrapped a chisel in lots of cloth to stop the tiles surface from getting scratch and scraped it off. (the cloth rips a lot though so you have to keep checking that the chisel tip is covered)

good luck
for adhesive try alcohol or hydr peroxide

for grout try muriatic acid..WARNING this is corrosive do not get on skin eyes etc IT WILL BURN
u can generally soften the adhesive with lacquer thinners.

It can then be scraped off.
