How can I remove adhesive from floor tiles?

we took up some carpet tiles and found some nice ceramic tiles underneath but they are covered with glue that we would like to remove to restore the original tilesHow can I remove adhesive from floor tiles?

We have found this to be a difficult process, as you have one of two options which may both change the look of the tile for better or worse.


1. You can break down the glue with a chemical (adhesive remover, mineral spirits, etc.) but will fill the pores of the tile/grout with the byproduct.


2. You can remove it mechanically with hand scrapers, or by machine with carbide teeth or sandpaper (depending on how ';dry'; the glue is; if it is still the least bit sticky it will gum up sandpaper). You run the risk of damaging the face of the tile with this method, but if you are able to get a consistent change, this has usually worked for us.How can I remove adhesive from floor tiles?
Try hot soapy water using a soft cloth or sponge. Failing that I suggest you go to a tile retailer ask them if they have something which will do the trick. Whatever you do, don't scrub the tiles using a hard abrasive. Not only will this scratch the tiles but will remove the shine.
