Removing tile adhesive from a hardwood floor?

I'm looking for some quick, inexpensive ways to remove black tile adhesive from 180-200 sqaure feet of hardwood floor in our living room.





I was planning to work on small sections at a time if possible, because I work full-time and will most likely have to attempt this restoration while my 14-month-old is at home with me.





It has occurred to us that we may have to empty the room and sand it off with coarse grit sandpaper and refinish the floor, but I was really hoping to just clean it.Removing tile adhesive from a hardwood floor?
Your best bet is to sand as you thought. Unfortunately cleaning with any type of solvents can do more harm and frustration than to just sand. One problem is the absorbing of the solvent into the wood causing, swelling of joints, discoloration and a huge mess that will take longer than it would to rent a sander that will do the area in less than an hour. Not only is it the right way to remove the adhesive but it will end up looking like a new floor as opposed to a dingy and muted looking hardwood from wear and the solvent cleaning. If you have black tile adhesive that is old cutback adhesive which is very similar to tar and mineral spirits or paint thinner will remove it but it will just bleed excess glue and solvent into cracks and you'll need about 30 rolls of paper towels. i would use products such as WD40 or Goof Off. both products seem to work well with removing adhesives
rent a floor sander
Try a product like Goof Off first. They sellit at Home Depot or Lowes. It cost about $4.00 for a 16 oz can. Wipe on liberally with a cloth and wait a few minutes and scrub off with same cloth. It does have a somewhat harsh smell at first, so make sure adequate ventilation is available especially for a child. I am a contractor and have used this on several types of floor adhesives, but of coarse there are some that will need to be sanded.
you need harmer and big sharp metal, I forget name the used to cut the carving the wood wood or flat big screwdriver's which you can hammered in back. or break tile by hammered on top break et which you lose are your tile
Please be careful the black adhesive was used to hold down the old asbestos type flooring definetly don't sand it.
WD40 has worked for me when I've had various adhesives to remove. I sprayed it on the sticky area then used a sponge with a scouring side. Hope this helps.
recently i done some work just like you`re describing . my brother in law owns a construction co. and i called him for advice . the best way to remove the black adhesive is with a simple propane torch and a garden edger . just heat up the glue enough to make it sticky and pliable again and scrape away . on smaller areas use a putty knife . once again the emphasis is on STICKY. don`t over heat it or you may have a fire . ( keep a fire extinguisher on hand while you get the hang of it .
