How do we remove old adhesive from a concrete floor in our basement?

Last year we removed old tiles from our basement floor. We are left with an ugly black adhesive that we cannot get off. We have tried everything home depot recommended. We also tried painting over it, but the paint peels off.How do we remove old adhesive from a concrete floor in our basement?
Have you tried mineral spirits?

You may have to sand or scrap it off. Been there done that.

Paint stripper may also work. Just keep the place ventalated if you go that route. How do we remove old adhesive from a concrete floor in our basement?
WD 40 has worked for me in the past. Its worth a try.
try goo-be gone. it works on anything adhesive or mineral spirits goo-be gone does not stink either.
Sunnyside brand Adhesive Remover will do the trick. www.sunnysidecorp.com

I bought it at a local hardware store in Dallas Tx. Its still a nasty job and alot of work. Paint will stick after cleaned. Rustoleum's new 2 part apoxy garage floor paint is good. Good Luck.
Your local equipment rental store has ';concrete grinders'; that you walk behind sort of like a lawn mower. Some are drum-type and others are circular swirling motion. Your choice of which type will best fit your need will be determined by how thick the adhesive is. The clerk at the rental store should be able to advise which type of grinder best fits your need. If you try any ';chemical'; removal you're just asking for trouble...........the grinder will be dusty, but that's all. The disadvantages of doing it chemically outway the dust.
